New Study Proves That CBD Can Prevent and Treat COVID-19
US scientists just gave CBD lovers yet another reason to keep using it, and it’s a big one!
Namely, according to a new in vitro study, CBD and its metabolite 7-OH-CBD inhibit the reproduction of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 within our bodies.
What’s more, this finding was made in epithelial lung cells, which are the first to get infected when in contact with the virus.
In a nutshell, COVID-19 enters these cells and inhibits one of our natural immune responses known as the interferon pathway. This then leads to increased cytokine production and inflammation.
However, CBD was found to work against SARS-CoV-2 infections in several ways:
- It stops coronavirus from entering lung epithelial cells
- It inhibits the reproduction of the virus within those cells
- It restores the immune response that was disabled by the virus
- It reduces pro-inflammatory cytokine production
In other words, taking CBD lowers your chances of both catching the coronavirus and getting seriously ill.
In fact, the study also showed that the incidence of infection in people taking prescription CBD before the pandemic was more than twelve times lower compared to their non-CBD consuming counterparts (a rate of 1.2% vs.12.2%, respectively).
That said, this is not the only time marijuana proved beneficial for fighting COVID-19 infections. Earlier this year, Canadian scientists found that certain cannabis strains lower the chances of infection by as much as 70%.
Nevertheless, although promising, clinical trials are still needed in order to determine the right CBD product and type of administration for treating (and preventing) SARS-CoV-2 infections.
For instance, inhaling it through smoke might not be the smartest choice as by-products found in CBD joints increase the risk of coronavirus complications.
